Pulpotomy

At our pediatric dental office, extraction is only suggested when absolutely necessary, recognizing the crucial role primary teeth play in your child's dental development. When a tooth is severely damaged, treatment is required to restore your child's oral health and smile. In these situations, our pediatric dentist may propose a pulpotomy.

What exactly is a Pulpotomy?

Often termed a "baby tooth root canal", a pulpotomy is an endodontic treatment recommended when dental decay or injury penetrates the dental pulp, the innermost part of the tooth housing nerves and blood. If neglected, the child may experience pain, increased sensitivity, and likely abscess formation leading to tooth extraction. A pulpotomy, however, eliminates the damaged tooth tissue, thereby preserving the tooth and avoiding further damage.

What is the Pulpotomy Procedure?

During a pulpotomy, our pediatric dentist sanitizes the treatment area and eliminates any decayed or infected pulp or tooth tissue. Once clean, a medicated material is applied to ward off potential infections. The root canals are then sealed to protect against future infections, and a dental crown or other restoration is strategically placed to prevent subsequent damage to the tooth.

We strive to ensure your child's comfort throughout the procedure. Despite the notorious fear surrounding root canals, advancements in modern dentistry provide us with the resources to administer care to your child that is both effective and free of discomfort.
